Organisasjonsnummer

A Norwegian organisasjonsnummer is the nine-digit identifier assigned to entities registered in the Central Coordinating Register for Legal Entities or the Register of Business Enterprises. Brønnøysundregistrene uses it as the key to registered enterprise information, and registered entities must include it on business documents. VAT registration uses the same underlying number, with MVA context added where applicable.

Why this matters when you invoice

The organisation number identifies the Norwegian entity behind the transaction and helps keep seller and customer records consistent. It should not be used as a shortcut for deciding VAT status or EHF capability.

Where it appears

Registered entities use the number on business documents. A VAT-registered business can use the same underlying number in the MVA context, while EHF delivery and recipient capability remain separate checks.

Worked example

Separate identity from VAT and e-invoice routing

A freelancer searches a customer's organisation number, reviews the registered name and address, and adds them to the invoice. If the sale needs VAT or the customer requests EHF, those questions are checked separately rather than inferred from the identifier.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every organisation number represents VAT registration.
  • Treating the identifier as proof of EHF or Peppol receiving capability.
  • Copying an unreviewed company name when public details have changed.

InvoiceCraftly's Norway company lookup shows supported public registry details; it does not determine VAT registration or invoice compliance.
